Spartanburg, S.C. – After opening the 2017-18 season on the road, the USC Upstate women's basketball team will play the first of 16 games inside the G.B. Hodge Center on Wednesday as the Spartans welcome Presbyterian College for a 7 p.m. contest.
Upstate is 0-1 following a 66-53 season-opening loss at East Carolina. The Spartans led 35-25 at halftime but the Pirates scored 41 points in the second half while limiting Upstate to nine points in both the third and fourth quarters.
The Spartans were led by a pair of players making their first collegiate starts. Rylie Parkhurst scored a career-high 14 points and was 5-for-10 from the field including a 4-for-7 mark from behind the 3-point line. Parkhurst surpassed her previous career high of seven points, set in last year's season opener against Converse. Anda Kuzmina made her collegiate debut a successful one with 11 points.
Presbyterian College is 0-2 with losses at San Diego State and at No. 7/8 UCLA last weekend. The Blue Hose are led by Cortney Storey, who is averaging 20.0 points per game. Storey and Janie Miles are the leading rebounders with 4.0 rebounds per game.
Wednesday's game is the 40th all-time in the series with Upstate holding a 21-18 edge. The Spartans earned a 55-48 win in Clinton, S.C. last year, but the Blue Hose won the most recent meeting inside the Hodge Center during the 2011-12 season.
The game between the Blue Hose and Spartans will be streamed on WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Updates are being posted on the Upstate women's basketball Twitter page (@UpstateWB).
The Spartans will head on the road this weekend, visiting Virginia Tech at 9 p.m. Friday and Campbell at 2 p.m. Sunday.
