Ft. Mill, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's golf team opened the Shamrock Intercollegiate at the Tega Cay Golf Club Friday afternoon with a team total 335 and is in eighth place heading into Saturday's second round. The tournament will conclude with the third round Sunday.
Upstate stands in eighth place, just one stroke behind Siena in seventh. Charleston Southern opened the tournament with a 306 to take a four-shot lead over host Winthrop at 310. Xavier is third after firing a 315 and is followed by Iowa (316) and Princeton (316), Murray State (319), Siena (334), USC Upstate (335), South Dakota State (337), Gardner-Webb (344), Presbyterian (355), The Citadel (373), St. Francis (Pa.) (375) and Tennessee State (384).
Winthrop's Jutta Degerman shot a 1-under 71 on the par-72, 5,969 yard Tega Cay Golf Club course to take the individual lead in the tournament. Charleston Southern's Rhiannon Loebs is in second after a 74.
Upstate's Richelle Wedzik opened with an 81 to lead the Spartans. She is tied for 28th heading into the second round. Julie Miller and Audrey Church both fired an 84 and are tied for 37th. Richia Wedzik shot an 85 and is tied for 42nd, while Jessica Wofford turned in an 88 and is tied for 53rd. Playing as an individual, Johanna Ebenhag opened with an 85 and is tied with Richia Wedzik for 42nd.
