Spartanburg, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team will kick-off the regular season with a pair of home matches this weekend, opening the season against VMI Friday night at 7:00 and playing Wofford Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at County University Soccer Stadium.
The game against VMI will be the regular season opener for both teams, while Wofford will open its season Friday night at Winthrop. Upstate was 0-0-2 in preseason scrimmages this season, taking a pair of 1-1 ties against Gardner-Webb and The Citadel. VMI was 0-2-0 in its preseason exhibitions, dropping a 4-0 decision to George Washington and a 3-0 loss to Marshall. Wofford went 1-1-0 in its exhibition season, taking a 3-0 win over Kennesaw State at a 4-0 loss to North Carolina.
Upstate fields a veteran team led by reigning A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year Sarah Plantz. Plantz, who is also the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year this season, totaled 122 saves last year as Upstate finished 3-15-0. VMI was 1-16-0 last season, including a 1-0 loss in overtime to Upstate. Wofford was 6-10-2 last season and took a 2-0 victory over the Spartans last season.
Upstate is 2-0-0 all-time against VMI. The Spartans took a 3-2 win in Spartanburg in 2011 and a 1-0 overtime victory in Lexington last year. Upstate is 0-4-0 all-time against Wofford. The Spartans dropped a 2-0 decision to the Terriers in 2009, a 1-0 decision in 2010, a 3-0 loss in 2011 and a 2-0 defeat last year. The teams have each played twice on their home fields. This will be the third meeting between the crosstown rivals at County University Soccer Stadium.
