Davidson, N.C. – Fueled by four saves from junior keeper Ellen Bright, the USC Upstate women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Davidson Friday evening in an exhibition match from Alumni Soccer Stadium.
The draw allowed Upstate to run its unbeaten streak in exhibition matches to five under head coach Abby Minihan. The Spartans opened the preseason with a 1-0 victory over Campbell Sunday evening behind a goal from junior Haley Gethin.
Upstate once again relied heavily on the play of its defense, as the Spartan back line allowed just six shots on goal to hold the Wildcats scoreless. Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Bailey logged the final 30 minutes and tallied two saves, which included an impressive diving save early in the third period to keep Davidson from taking the lead.
The Spartans conclude the preseason without conceding a goal in either match, as Upstate collected three saves against Campbell in the first exhibition game.
"I was very pleased with the way we played tonight against a good team like Davidson," Minihan said. "We were able to play a lot of different people, and I thought we stayed pretty organized no matter which lineup was on the field. Overall, I'm happy with how we played this preseason and we're looking forward to getting the regular season underway next week."
Upstate opens the regular season Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel from Washington Light Infantry Field.
