Spartanburg, S.C. – Coming off a strong start to the season and an impressive 11-inning battle against No. 20 Kentucky, the USC Upstate softball team received votes in this week's ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll released Tuesday. The Spartans will be in action Wednesday in a midweek doubleheader against Furman at Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate garnered two votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll, joining a group of schools receiving votes along with Florida State, Syracuse, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, North Carolina and Iowa. It is the first time this year that the Spartans have received votes in a national Top 25 poll. A-Sun rivals Florida Gulf Coast and Kennesaw State received one vote in the poll as well.
Upstate will head back to the diamond for the first time since its 11-inning thriller against 20th-ranked Kentucky when it plays host to Furman in a non-conference doubleheader at Cyrill Stadium Wednesday afternoon starting at 2:30.
Upstate enters the games with a 10-1 overall record, having suffered its first loss of the season to Kentucky in an 11 inning marathon game Sunday at Cyrill Stadium. Furman comes into the day with a 6-2 record, having split a doubleheader with Presbyterian its last time out. Upstate and Furman are tied, 15-15, in the all-time series, though the Spartans are 11-1 against the Paladins since moving to Division I in 2008. Furman last beat Upstate in 2008, splitting a doubleheader in Greenville. Kyle Jamieson is in his first season as head coach at Furman.
