Spartanburg, S.C. – Having had three games at N.C. State (doubleheader) and North Carolina (single game) cancelled due to inclement weather this week, the USC Upstate softball team picked up a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb Thursday, two days before it opens A-Sun play at home against North Florida. The doubleheader at Gardner-Webb begins at 2:00 p.m., while Upstate will face North Florida Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at 2:00 and a single game Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
Upstate stands 12-1 entering play on Thursday. The short trip to Boiling Springs, N.C., will be the first time Upstate has played away from the friendly confines of Cyrill Stadium this season. The Spartans are 34-2 all-time against the Bulldogs, including a doubleheader sweep at Cyrill Stadium earlier this season. Gardner-Webb last defeated Upstate in a doubleheader split in 2008, the Spartans' first year playing on the Division I level.
Upstate and North Florida (19-5, 0-0) were rivals when both schools were members of the Peach Belt Conference in Division II. North Florida owned the edge in the series in the Division II days, but Upstate has made strides in the series. The Ospreys lead the overall series, 16-14. However, Upstate is 9-1 against the Ospreys since moving to Division I in 2008. UNF last defeated the Spartans during the 2009 regular season in Jacksonville.
