Ujvari Named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week
Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout freshman hurler Jamie Ujvari has been named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 and tossing a no-hitter last week for the Spartans.
Ujvari, from Niceville, Fla., was tremendous last week, pitching in all four of Upstate wins and finishing the week with a 3-0 record, 0.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 16 innings of work. She punctuated the week by tossing a no-hitter in the A-Sun series finale against North Florida Sunday.
"Jamie was great last week and gave us a big lift when we needed it," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "She pitches with confidence and determination. She is a hard worker and this past week was a big indication what hard work and attitude can do. I am so proud of her for joining a very talented group of Upstate players who have received a weekly honor from the conference."
Ujvari began the week by closing the door on Gardner-Webb in the first game of the doubleheader sweep in Upstate's first away games of the season. She tossed one inning of relief, inheriting runners on base in the seventh, and struck out two in the win. She then tossed three innings of relief in the second game, striking out five to earn the 2-1 win over the Bulldogs.
While she was solid at Gardner-Webb, she was outstanding against North Florida in the A-Sun opener for both teams. With Upstate in need of a win after falling to the Ospreys in a 1-0 decision to open the series Saturday, Ujvari tossed a complete game to get the win for the Spartans in game two. She scattered three hits and struck out a career-high nine batters en route to the victory.
Sunday, though, was the biggest outing of the year for the freshman. Upstate needed a solid performance in order to take the series, 2-1. Ujvari delivered more than that. She tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in five innings to help lead the Spartans to a 13-0 victory over the Ospreys. She allowed just three base runners on two walks and a fielder's choice. She became the ninth Spartan to ever toss a no-hitter, pitching the 18th no-hitter in school history.
Ujvari is the third Upstate player to receive weekly honors from the A-Sun this season. Maddison Kieffer and Shellie Robinson were named the A-Sun Player of the Week earlier this season. Ujvari is also the third pitcher in Upstate history to earn A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors. All-time great Morgan Childers earned the honor nine times, while current teammate Hannah Alexander (Lexington, N.C.) picked up two weekly honors last season.
