Old Friends and Rivals Meet as Upstate Heads to Kennesaw State for Key A-Sun Series
Spartanburg, S.C. – Longtime friends and rivals will meet Friday and Saturday when USC Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins and Kennesaw State head coach Scott Whitlock meet in a key three-game A-Sun series at Kennesaw State. Friday's doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday afternoon's single game starts at 1:00.
Hawkins and Whitlock have been friends and rivals since 1995 when Kennesaw State joined the Peach Belt Conference during both school's Division II days. Together, they have amassed 1,649 wins in fastpitch softball, with Whitlock owning 985 victories and Hawkins winning 664 games.
Upstate enters the A-Sun series on a seven-game winning streak in conference action. The Spartans swept the three-game series against Northern Kentucky and the doubleheader at Jacksonville before the third game was canceled due to rain. The Spartans are 25-3 overall and 7-1 in the A-Sun. Kennesaw State is 23-7 overall and 7-2 in the A-Sun, having won four of its last five in league play.
Kennesaw State owns the lead in the all-time series at 35-7. However, the series has been dead even at 6-6 since Upstate made the jump to the A-Sun in 2008 with the Spartans winning three of the last four meetings.
