Spartanburg, S.C. – Former USC Upstate outfielder Shellie Robinson built upon her impressive season with the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) League on Wednesday evening by leading it to a doubleheader sweep over the Scrap Yard Dawgs.
Robinson, who played at Upstate from 2012-15, belted her eighth home run of the season, second-best on the team, in walk off fashion to lift Akron to a 7-5 victory in game one of the twin billing followed by a 7-3 victory in the second game.
On a night where former Akron pitcher Sarah Pauly, daughter of former Spartan assistant coach Rick Pauly, was recognized and threw out the first pitch, Robinson was the game one hero with her three-run walk off homer against one of the top pitchers this season for the NPF in Monica Abbott.
With the two victories on Wednesday, the Racers now need just one victory in their final three games to secure a playoff spot in the NPF Championship Series in Baton Rouge, La.
Robinson is enjoying the best offensive season of her professional career in 2017 with a .311 average, eight home runs and 30 RBI. She also boasts a .336 on-base percentage and .563 slugging percentage.
The DeLand, Fla. native was drafted by the Racers in 2015 with 23rd pick overall. She wrapped up her stellar four-year career as a Spartan leading the program in career home runs, slugging percentage and total bases. Robinson is the Division I career leader in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases and walks.
Robinson was a highly decorated player at Upstate. She was the ASUN Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015. She became the first Upstate student-athlete to earn All-America honors on the Division I level when she earned NFCA Third Team All-America honors in 2014. She was a four-time NFCA All-Region selection and earned ASUN First Team All-Conference honors as well.
