USC Upstate Heads to Stetson for 2018 ASUN Softball Championship

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team begins its quest for a sixth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance on Wednesday as the third-seeded Spartans face the sixth seed, and host school, Stetson Hatters in the opening game of the ASUN Softball Championship from Patricia Wilson Field.

The winner of the USC Upstate-Stetson matchup will face either No. 1 Kennesaw State or No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday. The Spartans earned the third seed in this week's tournament after finishing the regular season with a 31-17 overall record and 10-6 mark in conference play.

USC Upstate received six postseason honors from the ASUN on Tuesday afternoon highlighted by conference Player of the Year Karla Beasley. Beasley was also named First Team All-Conference along with Brittany Case, while Christina Biggerstaff and Ansley Gilstrap were named Second Team All-Conference. Logan Morris earned ASUN All-Freshman Team accolades.

Case and Gilstrap were also selected to the ASUN All-Academic Team on Monday.

Winners of the last three ASUN Softball Championships, the Spartans have the league's top fielding team ranking 12th nationally with a .977 fielding percentage. USC Upstate is also second in the conference in hitting (.280) and slugging percentage (.415), and third in on-base percentage (.361). The Spartan pitching staff is third in the ASUN with a 2.35 ERA.

Beasley leads the team offensively this season with a .392 average and 15 home runs while Morris has a team-high 39 RBI. In the circle, Biggerstaff is 15-9 with a 1.90 ERA and 211 strikeouts.

The ASUN Softball Championship field is made up of No. 1 Kennesaw State, No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 3 USC Upstate, No. 4 Lipscomb, No. 5 Jacksonville and No. 6 Stetson.
