SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Anna Novo (Caracas, Venezuela/El-Angel) wrapped up a record-breaking year in fine fashion, by scoring three singles wins to finish the year with a perfect 11-0 slate in the conference and with a school-record 29 wins. For her fine finish, she was rewarded with the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Novo also added two doubles wins with partner Emilia Milovanovic (Paris, France/CNED), as Upstate won three conference matches to wrap up the school's first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title with a perfect 11-0 conference slate. Novo's play at No. 1 singles and doubles helped Upstate to a 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Friday, a 5-2 win at ETSU on Wednesday and a 7-0 win over Campbell on Thursday.
She started the week with a three-set win against Gardner-Webb's Laura Kriett, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Then she took down ETSU's 79th-ranked Yeveniya Stupak, 6-4, 6-3, helping the Spartans take a 3-2 lead en route to the 5-2 win over the third-place Bucs on Wednesday and wrapped up the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Scarlett Alfonzo on Saturday. In doubles, Milovanovic and Novo paired to down ETSU's No. 1 pair of Stupak and Olya Batsula, 8-5 and closed the year with an 8-0 win over Campbell's Scarlett Alfonzo and Blanca Saenz.
Novo, a two-time Division II All-American, finished the season with a school-record 29 singles wins and 52 combined (singles and doubles) wins. She was 29-5 in singles play and 23-7 in doubles. The award is the fifth weekly award for the No. 1 singles player, as she won the Peach Belt Player of the Week three times during the 2007 season and also took home the A-Sun honors on March 14.
Upstate finished the season with a 17-3 overall record to wrap up its first year in Division I. It is not eligible for the postseason during its four year provisional status as a member of DI.
