SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Daniela Lovera picked up two singles wins to become the sixth player in school history to reach 50 career singles wins as the USC Upstate women's tennis team swept a doubleheader on Saturday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. The Spartans downed Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb, 7-0, in the morning before defeating crosstown rival Wofford, 6-1, in the afternoon.
Lovera, who joins fellow senior Anna Novo, former teammates Diana Martinez and Susana Hernandez and both Heather Weare (1990-94) and Paloma Castillo (2001-05) in the 50-win club, is currently fourth in school history with 109 combined (singles and doubles) wins.
Sophomore Emilia Milovanovic, thanks to two doubles wins with partner Novo at No. 1 doubles, became the ninth player in school history to reach 40 career doubles wins.
The Spartans (7-2 overall, 2-0 A-Sun) extended their A-Sun winning streak to 13 straight matches with the 7-0 win over the Lady Bisons (4-4 overall, 0-2 A-Sun) and their home winning streak to 27 matches after the 7-0 win over Wofford (0-5 overall).
Upstate started the day with a clean sweep of the Bisons, starting with the three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Ana-Sofia Camberos and Lovera posted an 8-1 win over Olivia Ellis and Elizabeth Keevil. At No. 1, Novo and Milovanovic downed Kara Jackson and Danielle Hansen, 8-2, and junior Carolina Bello and freshman Cinthya Lazaro added an 8-5 win over Raphaela Jann and Claire Landry at No. 2.
In singles play, Novo downed Jann, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Lovera added a 6-1, 6-0 win over Keevil at No. 3 and Camberos notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Landry at No. 5 to clinch the match. Milovanovic posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jackson at No. 2, Lazaro posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hansen at No. 4 and senior Vivian Neuenschwander closed the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ellis at No. 6.
The Spartans finished the day with their second straight win over the Terriers, starting with a sweep of doubles play. Bello and Lazaro posted an 8-2 win over Sabrina Smyers and Haley Baird at No. 2 and Lovera and Camberos posted an 8-2 win over Sonia Anand and Kristin Demosthenes at No. 3. Novo and Milovanovic added an 8-3 win over Cayley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence at No. 1 for Milovanovic's 40th career doubles win.
In singles play, Novo downed Wetzig, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 for her 19th win of the season, closing within one win of becoming the first player in school history to win 20 singles matches in three straight seasons in both men's or women's program history.
Camberos added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Betsy Haner at No. 6 and Lazaro added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anand at No. 5 singles to clinch the match. Lovera won her 50th singles match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Baird and after a loss No. 3 singles, Bello closed the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win over Smyers at No. 2.
Upstate gets back into action on Saturday when it travels to Mercer for a 10 a.m. A-Sun clash. The Spartans wrap up the weekend road swing with a 10 a.m. Sunday match against first-year program Kennesaw State.
