SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team will kick off its 2012 spring slate with a home contest against Presbyterian College Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
With a win, the Spartans can improve to 5-3 all-time (D-I era) against opponents from the Big South Conference.
"The sky is the limit for the women's team this spring," said head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein. "With the struggles of the 2011 spring season, there is a new lease on life with the hope of making an immediate impact during both the non-conference and conference portions of our schedule. Ana-Sofia Camberos, Talia Rojas and Maria Tonani return for the 2012 season. The trio of returners are joined by three freshmen (Isabel von Stryk, Hannah Al-Sakati and Lauren Byars) and one junior college transfer (Julie Bell). The team will face challenge as they try to obtain Atlantic Sun recognition, but leave no doubt, the team is up for the challenge."
• At the Elon Fall Inviational, Hannah Al-Sakati and Julie Bell dropped the A-2 doubles final to Elon's Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury (L, 2-8).
• All seven Spartans competed at the Upstate Fall Classic and Talia Rojas advance to the semifinals of the women's singles. Rojas and Isabel von Stryk reached the semifinals in women's doubles.
• Hannah Al-Sakati (Fr.), Julie Bell (Jr.), Lauren Byars (Fr.) and Isabel von Stryk (Fr.) join returners Ana-Sofia Camberos (Sr.), Talia Rojas (So.), Maria Tonani (Jr.) for the 2011-12 season.
• Dr. Oliver Trittenwein is in his second season at the helm of the Upstate women's tennis program.
