DELAND, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (5-9, 1-2 A-Sun) picked-up its first Atlantic Sun Conference win of the 2012 campaign Friday, shutting out Stetson (3-17, 0-4 A-Sun) by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-14 in the Sunshine State.
The Spartans dominated the entire contest as multiple hitters contributed to the Upstate offensive effort. Sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) led the squad, recording 11 kills, while freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) was second on the team with nine kills. McAvoy added three digs and one service ace, while Eversgerd had six digs, three total blocks and two aces.
Upstate senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) posted eight kills to go along with three digs, while freshmen Javon Gates (Indianapolis) and Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) had five and four kills, respectively. Gates also registered three assisted blocks. Freshman Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.) anchored the Spartan offense, handing out 31 assists and scooping up eight digs.
Stetson's Kaley Melville led all hitters with a match-high 18 kills on the night, while collecting seven digs. Cailyn Prewitt helped the Hatters with nine kills, while Kayla Weller and Kelli Carneal split the setting duties, giving out 17 and 16 assists, respectively. Monique Russell led the SU defense, gathering nine digs on the night.
