JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (12-18, 6-11 A-Sun) dropped a 3-2 decision at Jacksonville (9-22, 6-11 A-Sun) Friday night by scores of 18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-10 as JU keeps its Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament hopes alive.
The Spartans were led tonight by a trio of hitters recording double-digit kills as freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) led the way with 18 kills. Sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) tallied 15 kills, while senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) posted 10 kills. Freshman Jaina Jackson (Huntley, Ill.) helped the Spartan offensive effort with seven kills.
Upstate freshman Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.) registered her 11th double-double of the season, handing out 50 assists and gathering 10 digs. Senior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) collected a match-high 27 digs on the night, while freshman Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) was second the squad with 11 digs. Defensively at the net, McAvoy paced the Spartans with five assisted blocks on the night.
Jacksonville was led by Sammie Strausbaugh, registering a match-high 20 kills. She completed the double-double, scooping up 13 digs on the night. Emily Laskelle was second on the team with 12 kills, while Kylie Jacob and Alyssa Robertson helped with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Jacob paced all blockers on the night, posting a match-high nine rejections including one solo denial.
Courtney Kendall anchored the Dolphin offense, dishing out a match-high 55 assists to go along with 14 digs for the double-dip. Thalya Pagan collected a team-high 19 digs for JU, while Taylor Nyquist gathered 12 digs.
