Ospreys Sweep Spartans in Three

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (12-18, 6-12 A-Sun) closed out the 2012 season, dropping a 3-0 decision at Atlantic Sun Conference foe North Florida (20-11, 11-17 A-Sun) Saturday by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-13.

The Spartans were led by sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.), tallying eight kills each. Freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) helped the offensive effort with seven kills, while scooping up 10 digs.

Upstate freshman Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.) registered her 12th double-double of the season, posting 22 assists and 10 digs. Senior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) once again anchored the Spartan defense, collecting 19 digs. Junior Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) and freshman Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) added seven and six digs, respectively for Upstate.

North Florida was led by a double-double from Paige Pridgeon with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Dagnija Medina recorded a match-high 13 kills. Carolyn Jenkins helped with nine kills, while Marija Pantovic and Anna Budinska each contributed six kills. Britt Claessen handed out a match-high 46 assists to go along with five digs.

The Osprey defense was led by Nicole Baran, gathering a match-best 22 digs, while Jenkins registered a match-high five blocks. Cari Whitmire collected 10 digs for UNF, while Kayla Fessler recorded eight.

With the conference loss Saturday, the Spartans fall to 6-12 in A-Sun play. In other league action Jacksonville defeated ETSU 3-2, giving JU the fifth seed in the A-Sun.
