Upstate Wraps up Road Trip this Weekend at NJIT

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team finishes a three-match road trip this weekend as it heads north to face the NJIT Highlanders Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. inside the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

Upstate (11-13, 3-4) began its road trip last weekend with a pair of defeats at Kennesaw State and Lipscomb. The Spartans began the weekend with a 3-0 loss at Kennesaw State on Oct. 14 before falling 3-1 to Lipscomb on Oct. 15. In the first match against Kennesaw State, Brianna Tellschow led Upstate offensively with eight kills and did not commit an error, while hitting .571 in the match. Callie Yeargin finished with a team-high 14 kills, to go with a .355 hitting percentage, at Lipscomb and fell just shy of a double-double after adding eight digs.

NJIT enters the weekend matchup with an 8-16 overall record and 0-7 mark in ASUN play after falling 3-0 on Wednesday to Fairleigh Dickinson. The Highlanders are led by third-year head coach Peter Volkert. NJIT has earned wins this season over Saint Francis (Pa.), Morgan State, Fordham, St. Francis Brooklyn, Saint Peter's and Lafayette.

The Spartans and Highlanders are meeting for the fourth time in program history on Saturday with Upstate winning all three of the previous matches. The Spartans defeated NJIT 3-2 in the conference opener on Sept. 24 in Spartanburg. In the first match, Upstate had four players finish with double-doubles in Madison Haake, Montana Swanson, Callie Yeargin and Rebecca Shearer. Yeargin and Shearer both set new career-highs in kills as Yeargin had 18 and Shearer 17.

The Spartans return home next weekend for two conference matches beginning on Friday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. against Lipscomb.
