Upstate Ready for First-Ever ASUN Volleyball Championship Appearance

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team travels to Nashville, Tenn. this week to participate in the 2016 ASUN Volleyball Championship hosted by Lipscomb Nov. 17-19 at Allen Arena. The Spartans are in the postseason for the first time in the program's Division I era.

Upstate begins ASUN Volleyball Championship play on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. EST against fourth-seeded North Florida in the first of two opening round matches. In the final match of the day, No. 3 seed Florida Gulf Coast faces No. 6 seed Jacksonville at 8:30 p.m. EST. With a win, the Spartans advance to the semifinals to face top-seeded Lipscomb at 6 p.m. EST on Friday.

Upstate earned the fifth seed in this week's tournament after finishing with a 13-18 overall record and 5-9 mark in ASUN play. The Spartans concluded the regular season last weekend by splitting a pair of home matches highlighted by a 3-0 sweep of Stetson in the season finale. Madison Haake combined for two double-doubles over the weekend while Callie Yeargin added a double-double in a five-set loss to Florida Gulf Coast.

North Florida enters the postseason with an 18-13 record on the season and went 8-6 against conference opponents. The Ospreys are led by fifth-year head coach Steve Loeswick.

Upstate and North Florida are meeting for the third time this season and 42nd time in program history. The Ospreys hold a 33-8 lead in the all-time series after the teams split both matches during the regular season. In the last meeting, the Spartans recorded a 3-0 victory in Jacksonville on Nov. 5 to clinch a spot in the ASUN Volleyball Championship.

Tournament passes will be available for $20 and individual session tickets are $8. Admission for all college students presenting a valid student ID from any ASUN institution will be free. Children under five years will be admitted free.
