Upstate Set for Three Matches this Weekend at Demon Deacon Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team returns to the court this weekend as it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the four-team Demon Deacon Invitational hosted by Wake Forest at LJVM Coliseum.

The Spartans begin tournament play on Friday afternoon when they face Maryland Eastern Shore at 4:30 p.m., followed by two games on Saturday with Wake Forest at 10:00 a.m. and William & Mary at 4:30 p.m.

Upstate began its week on Wednesday evening with a 3-0 non-conference road loss at Charlotte. Madison Haake picked up her fourth double-double in seven matches this season after finishing with 34 assists and 11 digs, while Payton Duncan led the Spartans offensively with a career-high nine kills.

Lily Dempsey has compiled a team-leading 60 kills and 14 total blocks this season for Upstate and is averaging 2.61 kills per set. Haake has dished out 226 assists to go with 75 digs while Kaleigh Kelley adds a team-high 119 digs.

Maryland Eastern Shore enters the weekend with a 5-2 overall record, while Wake Forest is 4-2 on the season and William & Mary sits at 2-5. The Spartans currently lead the all-time series over Wake Forest 1-0 and are facing Maryland Eastern Shore and William & Mary for the first time in program history.

The Spartans travel to Knoxville, Tenn. next weekend, Sept. 15-16, to compete against Furman, Tennessee and Marshall at the Rocky Top Invitational.
