Senior Jovana Lubura (Belgrade, Serbia/New Mexico Military Institute) nearly posted a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs, but Campbell was able to take advantage of a .286 team hitting percentage to lead to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-19) win over the USC Upstate volleyball team in Atlantic Sun Conference play at the Pope Center on Thursday afternoon.
Freshman Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) notched a career-high six blocks and added three four kills for Upstate (6-12 overall, 3-7 A-Sun) and Lubura added two aces to account for 11.5 points in the match. Sophomore Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added nine digs and senior Holly Mauldin (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) added 12 assists.
Upstate fell behind 7-3 in the first set, but came back to within one point at 10-9 before three straight Upstate attack errors helped Campbell (5-13 overall, 3-6 A-Sun) take a 14-9 lead en route to the 25-18 win. After the teams battled to a 6-6 draw in the second set, Caitlin Bendy served up eight straight points, including two aces to lead Campbell to the 25-14 win.
The teams battled to a 13-13 tie in the third set before the Camels went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. From there, the Camels were able to take the 25-19 win.
The Camels were led by 10 kills and 14 digs by Sarah Hill and Emily Werner added 11 kills, five digs and two blocks. Ashley Weers added five kills and four blocks. Hope Leatigaga added 34 assists, seven digs and four kills and Elisabeth Ennis added 20 digs.
Upstate gets back into action as it wraps up its first time through the Atlantic Sun Conference when it travels to Campbell for a 3 p.m. Thursday matchup in Buies Creek, N.C.
