Freshman Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central) extended her 10-dig match streak to three in a row, the freshman hitter added her first career double-double as she posted a career-high 10 kills to go with 13 digs, but it wasn't enough to lift Upstate past Campbell, as the Camels took a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20) win at the Pope Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Quimby also added two blocks and notched 10 kills in the match to surpass her previous career-high of eight kills. Sophomore Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) added 10 kills and three blocks as she became the first player in the D-I era to reach 150 career blocks for the Spartans (6-15 overall, 2-10 A-Sun). Senior Morgan Bucciferro (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) added 26 assists and one dig, as she reached the 600-career dig plateau.
Junior Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added 19 digs and two aces, moving within 10 digs of becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 in a career. Junior Erin Jacobsen (Virginia, Minn./Iowa Lakes C.C.) added eight kills and three blocks and freshman Paige Weiland (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) added eight kills and 10 digs. Junior Katie Downey (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) posted six kills, 10 digs and two blocks and freshman Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) added 15 assists, seven digs and two aces.
The Spartans fell behind 20-14 in the second set, but rallied after a kill by Downey led to four points off her serve, closing the gap to 20-19. A block by Quimby and Thomas tied the set at 21 and four Campbell errors helped Upstate take a 25-22 win.
Upstate fell behind 14-7 in the first set, but the team rallied on the serve of Healey, as two Jacobsen kills and two aces helped the Spartans tie it at 14. The two teams rallied back and forth from there, until a kill by Jordan Reaves gave the Camels (15-8 overall, 8-4 A-Sun) a 22-19 lead. The Camels went on for the 25-20 win.
The Camels were able to control the third set after the squads tied the set at seven. From there, the Camels built their lead to 20-11 after a kill by Emily Werner. From there, the Camels held on for the 25-15 win.
The two teams fought out to a tie at eight in the fourth set, but five points on Sarah Hill's serve put Campbell in control. The Spartans rallied after falling behind 17-12, coming as close as two points at 21-19, but a kill by Caitlin Bendy gave the Camels a 23-19 lead and the Camels held on for the 25-20 win.
Werner led the Camels with 15 kills and eight digs while Bendy added 11 kills and three blocks. Ashley Weers added 10 kills and three blocks and Allyson Goldbach posted 10 kills, nine digs and four aces. Hill notched 22 digs and Hope Leatigaga notched 26 assists and seven digs.
The Spartans get back on the court on Tuesday as they step out of conference for the last time in 2009 when they visit Gardner-Webb for a 7 p.m. match.
