Box Score Johnson City, Tenn. – Mindy Quimby tallied nine kills to lead the USC Upstate offensive attack, but ETSU fought off the Spartans in the first set and went on to a three-game sweep Wednesday night in A-Sun volleyball action. Upstate ended its season, its fourth in NCAA Division I, as ETSU claimed the victory by scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-17.
Upstate finished the season 10-18 overall and 1-9 in the A-Sun. The 10 wins are one shy of the Division I school record. ETSU improved to 24-8 overall and 7-3 in the league.
Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) totaled nine kills to lead Upstate's attack. She also tallied six digs. Cori Harris (Champaign, Ill.) finished with six kills and six digs, while Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) added 25 assists.
Seniors Katie Downey (Belleville, Ill.) and Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo.) ended their collegiate careers Wednesday night. Downey is the program's all-time leader with 264 assisted blocks and leads the program in several statistical categories during the Division I era. Healey finished her career ranked third all-time with 1,499 digs. She is the program's all-time digs leader during the Division I era.
Upstate battled tough in the first set. After ETSU managed to put a little distance between itself and the Spartans midway through the frame, the Spartans couldn't really make up any ground and lost by five points. The set was tied at 10-10 when ETSU scored the next three points. Upstate closed within one, 13-12, but ETSU stretched its lead to five points, 19-14. From there, the teams basically traded points with the Spartans only getting as close as three points the rest of the way.
ETSU scored five of the first six points in the second set. Upstate got within two, 9-7, but the Buccaneers extended the lead to seven, 14-7, and then nine, 17-8, before going on for the 25-13 win.
Upstate hung tough through the first part of the third set. The Spartans trailed by three, 11-8, but ETSU stretched its lead to five, 19-14. After an Upstate point, the Bucs scored the next four points to open a 23-15 lead and went on for the win in the frame and the match.Erin Ryan led the ETSU attack with 12 kills as the only player with double digit kill totals in the match.
Megan Devine added nine kills, while Whitney Cogburn tallied 31 assists. The Buccaneers hit .324 for the match, while Upstate hit at a .112 clip.
