Boiling Springs, N.C. - Crislyn Chewning had four RBI hits and Amber Hamilton tossed a four-hit shutout in game two as USC Upstate took a doubleheader sweep of Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field. Upstate won game one, 6-1, and game two, 6-0.

Morgan Childers went the distance in game one, striking out nine, to improve to 18-3 on the year. She increased her career total to 68 wins, moving one win shy of Upstate's all-time record of 69 held by Upstate Athletics Hall of Fame member Kristy Middagh. She also moved into a tie for fourth all-time in the A-Sun.

Upstate improved to 21-6 on the year and will host Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and Stetson on Saturday in a pair of A-Sun doubleheaders at Cyrill Stadium. Gardner-Webb fell to 11-18 on the year. Upstate now owns a 28-2 record all-time against the Bulldogs, including a 5-1 mark since moving to Division I for the 2008 season.

"We had a complete day today," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "We pitched well, hit the ball, and played really good defense. I was happy to see us put together key hits. The top of the lineup with Kim (Brasil) and Crislyn delivered for us all day long and Amber and Morgan really limited their hitters. It was a good way to start the week with four tough games coming up this weekend."

Upstate put a run on the board in the first when Chewning drove in Brasil after Brasil led off the inning with a double. The Spartans broke open a close game with four runs in the third inning of game one. Ericka Harris started things off with a two-out single. It opened the flood gates as Katie Zauner tripled to score Harris. Cheyanna Ohlrich reached on an error and Zauner scored on the play. Lauren Quevedo then cranked out a two-run home run to left to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Upstate made it a 6-0 game with a run in the fourth on Chewning's RBI single, again driving in Brasil. Gardner-Webb got a run on the board in the seventh when Jordyn Arrowood singled to drive in a run.

Childers went the distance, tossing seven innings with eight strikeouts. She gave up just three hits on the day. She now has 768 career strikeouts and 235 on the year. Christine Murray took the loss for Gardner-Webb, dropping to 6-8 on the year.

Chewning was solid at the plate, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two RBI. Brasil had a pair of hits and runs.

Hamilton started game two and tossed a strong game. She finished the game with a four-hit shutout, striking out four along the way. Gardner-Webb never could get anything going against the sophomore.

Upstate broke open a 0-0 tie in the third inning when, again, Brasil led of the inning with a double and Chewning drove her in with an RBI single. The Spartans made it a 2-0 game with a run in the fifth on Ohlrich's RBI single.

Upstate scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away. In the sixth, Brasil drove in a run and Chewning followed with a triple to score Brasil. In the seventh, Monica Hall and Keri Sarratt collected a pair of RBI singles in the inning.
