Spartan Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to South Carolina State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (7-14) dropped a 3-0 decision to South Carolina State (14-11) tonight in the Hodge Center by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22.  

Junior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) led the Spartans, recording her 10th double-double of the season with 22 assists and 12 digs. She also added four kills and one block.

The Spartans struggled finding the floor tonight, registering a .129 hitting percentage. Freshman Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) tallied a team-high with eight kills and two blocks, while junior Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) totaled seven kills. Senior Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla.) added six kills and sophomore Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) contributed 11 digs.

Thomas recorded one block on the night and continues to rank fifth all-time in career-block assists at Upstate with 231, just four shy of Kendall Harper's (1998-01) fourth-place mark of 235. The senior sits just outside of the school record books with 300 total career denials. She is two blocks away from tying Trina Beaty's (1990-91) 10th-best mark of 302 and nine shy of Harper's ninth-place mark of 309.

S.C. State was led by a double-double from Desire Waller with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also recorded five service aces on the night. Shabree Roberson posted 10 kills, five digs and three blocks for the Bulldogs, while Bria Brimmer dished out 32 assists.  

Upstate leads the all-time series against S.C. State 12-1, including a 7-1 record at home. In an Aug. 28, 2007 contest with the Bulldogs, the Spartans earned a 3-0 win.
