Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team snapped its five-match losing-streak tonight, picking up a 3-2 victory over N.C. Central by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 14-25 and 15-13 as senior Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla.) tallied her 1,000-Career Kill.
Thomas led the Spartans tonight with 13 kills. The senior entered the match with 999 career-kills and finished the contest with 1,012 career-kills. She ranks third among Atlantic Sun Conference active career-kill leaders.
Junior Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) paced Upstate, recording her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Quimby's classmate Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) handed out 32 assists, while collecting nine digs and registering a career-high nine kills. The setter's previous career-high was eight kills, set against Presbyterian Oct. 25.
Sophomore Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) led the Spartan defense, scooping up 16 digs on the night, while Thomas led the charge at the net with a season-high six blocks, three solo denials and three assisted rejections. Thomas ranks ninth in school history, tying Kendall Harper's (1998-01) mark of 309 career-blocks. The senior is fourth all-time in career-block assists at Upstate with 236, passing Harper's mark of 235.
N.C. Central was led by a pair of double-doubles from Emanuelle Santos and Dayanna Arrufat. Santos had 20 kills and 10 digs, while Arrufat posted 17 kills and 12 digs. Shantal Moore added 14 kills for the Eagles, while Jzima-Malaki Kalao dished out 55 assists.
The Spartans hold a 3-0 advantage over the N.C. Central. In the teams' most recent meeting, Upstate claimed a 3-0 victory over the Eagles in Spartanburg, S.C., Oct. 20, 2010. This was the first meeting between the two in Durham, N.C.
