Spartan Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision on Senior Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Atlantic Sun Conference opponent ETSU today at the Hodge Center as the Buccaneers spoiled the Spartan Senior Day by scores of 20-25, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-22. Prior to the start of the match, Upstate honored a pair of seniors in four-year starters Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C.) and Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla.).

The Spartans were led today by a pair of double-doubles from juniors Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) and Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.).  Quimby posted her sixth double-double of the season and second-straight, while Sanders tallied her 14th double-double of the 2011 campaign.

Quimby had 18 kills and 15 digs, tying her career-record. This marks the third time Quimby has registered 18 kills in a match and the second this season. Sanders dished out 43 assists on the day and scooped up 19 digs, while earning six kills.

Thomas recorded 17 kills, six digs and two blocks, while sophomore Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) led the Upstate defense with 28 digs. Other noteworthy Spartans included sophomore Paige Weiland (Atlanta, Ga.) and junior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Weiland registered four kills and eight digs, while Bingham posted eight kills.

ETSU was also led by a pair of double-doubles in Megan Devine and Ivey Rice. Devine tallied 18 kills and 18 digs, while Rice had 13 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Jamie Rutledge and Kayla Williams split time setting for the Buccaneers, recording 24 and 25 assists, respectively.  

The Buccaneers lead the all-time series 9-4, including a 3-1 mark at the Hodge. ETSU beat the Spartans earlier this season in Johnson City, Tenn., 3-0 Tuesday, Sept. 20.
