Glenn Tallies Career-Best 16 Points, but Spartans Fall to Dolphins

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Ricardo Glenn (Augusta, Ga./Richmond Academy) scored a career-best 16 points and picked up nine rebounds on Sunday, but it was not enough as USC Upstate fell to Jacksonville, 79-69, inside the Hodge Center.

Not only did Glenn record a career-best 16 points, he also sank a career-best five field goals and six free throws despite coming off of the bench and playing just 16 minutes.

Aside from Glenn's near double-double, Torrey Craig (Rock Hill, S.C./Great Falls) also netted his second double-double of the weekend as he finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Josh Chavis (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley HS) scored 10 points on Sunday after connecting on three of his three-point attempts.

Chavis' triple, his first of the day, at the 1:26 mark of the first half put the senior in sole possession of third place in school history in three-point field goals.  Career trey number 191 put him ahead of former Spartan Luke Payne (190; 2004-08).

Upstate (4-22, 3-13 A-Sun) fell behind by as many as 11 in the first seven minutes of play as the Spartans connected on their first field goal at the 12:32 mark of the first half when Tony Dukes (Ellenwood, Ga./Atlanta Metropolitan) connected on his jumper from the right side of the paint.

With the Dolphins (17-8, 11-5) leading 18-7 with 9:39 to play the Spartans cut the lead to six, 18-12, after a lay-up by Chalmers Rogers (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill HS) and a three-pointer by Craig.  Over the final 8:05 of the first half, the Jacksonville lead would fluctuate between eight and 14 points.

The Dolphins took a 33-19 lead on Keith McDougald's three from the left wing with six seconds remaining on the clock.  The Spartans quickly in-bounded the ball and Dukes put up a half court heave that banked in as time expired cutting the Dolphin lead to 11 at 33-22.

Upstate battled throughout the second half as they tried to stay within striking distance of the Dolphins.

Trailing 56-44 with 6:52 to play, the Spartans went on a 7-2 run to cut the Jacksonville lead to 58-51 with 5:51 to play.

The run was started by Babatunde Olumuyiwa's (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS) lay-up on an assist by Chavis.  Craig cut the lead to eight after connection on his lay-up with 6:12 to play.

Jacksonville pushed the lead back to 10, at 58-48, but Chavis cut the lead down to seven on his triple less than 10 seconds later.

The Dolphins' Ayron Hardy connected on a tip-in on Russell Powell's missed lay-up at the 5:38 mark.  Powell's shot appeared to hang on the rim, however the tip-in counted and it seemed to take the wind out of the Spartans' sail.

The Spartans would fail to get any closer than nine down the stretch as Jacksonville claimed the 79-69 victory.

Four different Dolphins reached double-figures, leading the way was Ayron Hardy (15), followed by Delwan Graham (14), Travis Cohn (13) and Aloys Cabell (12).

The Dolphins, who led wire-to-wire, shot 57.7% (15-for-26) from the floor in the second half and finished 52.8% (28-for-53) from the floor for the game.  Meanwhile the Spartans shot just 36.7% (22-for-60) for the game and just 24.0% (6-for-25) from beyond the arc.

The Spartans led the way in second chance points (12-9), fast break points (4-2) and bench scoring (24-23).  Jacksonville led the way in points in the paint (36-30) and points off of turnovers (13-19).

The Spartans will head to the Music City as they begin a three-game road stretch at Lipscomb on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.
