Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Wednesday night, Spartan rookie Luke Weber (Spartanburg, S.C.) became just the third player in program history to tally 20 doubles in a single season and USC Upstate claimed an 8-5 victory over The Citadel at Fluor Field.
Weber's double to the gap in left center marked double number 20 on the season and he is now tied for the single-season record with Kenny Dickson and Joe Barrett. Dickson tallied 20 doubles in Upstate's inaugural season (1986), while Barrett accomplished the feat in 2000.
In the second inning, Grason Wiggins (Statesboro, Ga.) delivered a RBI single to left center and Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C.) scored, putting the Spartans (17-32) in front, 1-0. Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill.) scored on Blake Green's (Rock Hill, S.C.) fielder's choice RBI and Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch to push Upstate's lead to 3-0.
The Spartans doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cook scored his second run of the game thanks to a throwing error by Bulldog third baseman Drew DeKerlegand. Liput trotted home from third on Branden Millhouse's (Summerville, S.C.) sacrifice fly to right and Wiggins pushed the Spartan lead to six as he scored on Green's RBI ground out to second.
In the sixth, The Citadel (20-29) cut the deficit in half as they plated three runs on one swing of the bat. With Brad Felder standing on first and Nick Orvin on second, Matt Simonelli sent a 2-1 offering from Upstate starter David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) over the wall in left field, cutting the Spartan lead to 6-3.
The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and closed the gap to just one run (6-5). Orvin singled up the middle and tallied two RBI as Legare Jones and Josh Pless came around to score.
The Spartans were able to push the lead back to three in the home half of the seventh inning. Weber's double of the wall in left center allowed Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) to score. Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) scored the game's final run on Millhouse's RBI ground out.
Roseboom earned his third win of the season after pitching five-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks. Jake Waller (Phoenixville, Pa.) picked up save number three of 2011 after hurling the final 2.1 innings, giving up just one hit to go along with two punch outs.
Bulldog starter Logan Cribb fell to 1-3 on the season after pitching four innings, allowing six total runs (five earned) on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Green, Bumgardner and Wiggins all tallied two hits and the Spartan trio combined for three RBI and two runs.
Orvin and Simonelli led The Citadel with three hits apiece and totaled five RBI and two runs.
The Spartans will wrap-up the home slate this weekend as they host Mercer in the final games of the season at Harley Park. The series will begin with a single game on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., followed by a twinbill on Sunday afternoon, starting at 1:00 p.m.
