KENNESAW, Ga. – Josh Carr hurled a complete game, limiting the Spartans to just two hits and seven total base runners as Kennesaw State scored 10 runs on 11 hits en route to the series opening win on Friday night at Stillwell Stadium.
Carr used 117 pitches, striking out eight batters and walking three en route to his fourth win of 2011. USC Upstate (14-31, 7-13 A-Sun) starter Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.) was tagged with the loss and falls to 4-6 on the season. DeCecco gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings of work.
The Owls (25-20, 12-9 A-Sun) sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and were able to score four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead after one inning.
KSU tacked on a single run in the both the second and third to take a 6-0 lead.
In the eighth, the Owls again struck for four runs, all coming with two outs, setting the final tally at 10-0. The inning was capped by Ethan Herron's two-RBI single through the left side.
Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) and Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.) were the only Spartans to record a hit and Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) drew a pair of walks on Friday night.
Andy Criscaden led the Owls with a 3-for-3 performance to go along with two runs and two RBI, while Ethan Herron finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run.
The Spartans and Owls will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
