Upstate Volleyball Falls to Wofford in Hodge Homecoming

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (2-8) returned to the Hodge Center for the first time since the 2009 season tonight at the Quality Inn & Suites Spartan Classic, falling to cross-town rival Wofford (10-3) in three-straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-10.

The Spartans were led offensively tonight by seniors Kelsie Queen and Morgan Thomas with seven and six kills, respectively. Sophomore Amanda Carroll dished out 21 assists, while tallying six digs and one kill. Junior Emily Sanders collected nine digs, while Thomas added a team-high three blocks. Sanders also had three serving aces, while Queen added one ace and six digs.

Taylor Baird and Kelsey Bagwell led the defensive charge for the Terriers with 16 and 15 digs, respectively. Offensively, Rachel Woodlee recorded a team-high 14 kills for Wofford, while Bekah Dorsey had 30 assists. Woodlee also posted seven digs on the night.

Other noteworthy Spartans on the night include juniors Mindy Quimby and Emily Bingham, sophomore Morgan Page and freshman Kayla McAvoy. Quimby posted seven digs to go along with two kills, while Page also collected seven digs. McAvoy registered four kills on the night and one dig, while Bingham echoed those stats.

This marks the first game for the Spartans in their home arena, the Hodge Center, since Nov. 7, 2009 when they lost to Lipscomb 3-0. During the 2010 season the Hodge was undergoing renovations.

Upstate leads Wofford in the overall series 28-9. In the teams' last meeting Sept. 17, 2010, the Terriers beat the Spartans at Wofford 3-1. Upstate holds a 14-4 record against the Terriers at home.

Earlier today, Wofford beat Charleston Southern (2-8) 3-1 by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-13. In the second match of the Spartan Classic today, Western Carolina (4-8) outlasted Gardner-Webb (2-8) 3-2 by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25 and 15-6.

Tomorrow's tournament action opens with a 10 a.m. match between Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb. The 12:30 p.m. contest will pit the Spartans against Western Carolina. The Catamounts lead the all-time series against Upstate 7-3. Earlier this season, the Spartans beat Western Carolina 3-0 at Virginia's Marriott Cavalier Classic Aug. 26.

The Quality Inn & Suites Spartan Classic concludes with Wofford squaring off against Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. tomorrow, followed by Charleston Southern taking on Western Carolina at 5:30 p.m. The all-tournament team will be announced following the final match.
