RADFORD, Va. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (1-3) took Radford (1-3) to five sets tonight at the third annual Radford Fall Tournament, dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 loss with scores of 19-25, 31-29, 21-25, 25-16 and 15-13.
Juniors Emily Sanders and Mindy Quimby each registered their second double-doubles of the season to led the Spartans, while freshman Kayla McAvoy recorded her first career double-double. Quimby matched her career-high with 18 kills, which she also recorded Oct. 23, 2009 against North Florida, while setting a personal-best of 16 digs. Prior to tonight's contest, the outside hitter had posted 15 digs in three different matches.
McAvoy had 10 kills and 11 digs, while Sanders dished out 55 assists, two shy of her personal record, and collected 16 digs. Quimby also had a team-high of four aces on the night.
The senior duo of Morgan Thomas and Kelsie Queen tallied 16 kills apiece. Thomas added a pair of digs and a pair of blocks, while Queen had four digs and one block.
Sophomore Morgan Page led Upstate with a career-high 20 digs. She recorded 17 digs Sept. 17, 2010 against Stetson.
Radford had two players record double-doubles as Jen Braden had 33 assists and 11 digs and Megan McWhorter totaled 12 kills and 13 digs. Emma Deininger collected a team-high of 13 kills, while Rachel Brummitt added 28 digs for the Highlanders.
This marks the fourth meeting between RU and Upstate. The Highlanders lead the all-time series 3-1. This was the first match-up between the two teams at Radford. The teams' last met Sept. 6, 2008 in Spartanburg, S.C., when the Spartans lost 3-1, posting scores of 25-22, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-16.
The Radford Fall Tournament wraps up tomorrow as the Spartans take on UMKC and Chicago State.
Saturday opens with a 10:30 a.m. match between Upstate and UMKC. This will be the first meeting for the Spartans and Kangaroos. The Spartans square off with Chicago State Saturday at 5 p.m. for the second time in history. Upstate swept the Cougars at a neutral site in Peoria, Ill., Aug. 29, 2009 in three-sets with scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11.
