Spartanburg, S.C. – In the midst of a strong year with a 36-10 overall record and heading into the last weekend of the regular season, the USC Upstate softball program continues to build for the future as well as head coach Chris Hawkins announces the signing of College of Siskiyous pitcher Anna Miller to a national letter of intent.
Miller is a sophomore and ace of the staff at Siskiyous, the No. 1-ranked team in the California Junior College rankings. She will lead the Lady Eagles against Yuba in the first round of the Northern California Regionals this weekend. Siskiyous is currently 35-2 overall and the Golden Valley Conference champions with a 20-0 record. The Lady Eagles are on an 18-game winning streak.
"I feel really good about the addition of Anna to our recruiting class and program," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "She is an outstanding pitcher who is the best junior college pitcher in California and could very well be a lock to be the pitcher of the year this season. We will have two incoming pitchers who have demonstrated the ability to compete at very high levels and have enjoyed tremendous success. I truly feel that bringing in Anna along with Jamie Ujvari and adding them to our current staff led by Hannah Alexander will take our pitching staff to another level."
Miller, from Portland, Ore., is Siskiyous' No. 1 pitcher, but does share time in the circle with two other pitchers. Still, she has seen the most innings and has led Siskiyous with a 17-2 record. She has allowed just 13 earned runs and struck out 178 batters in 114.1 innings pitched. Her 10.9 strikeouts per game is the top average in the state, a full 1.7 better than the next closest pitcher. She has led the Lady Eagles to the best team ERA in the state at 1.02.
Miller has made 24 appearances on the season, 20 as a starter. She has tossed 14 complete games and a team-high seven shutouts. She has also picked up two saves on the year. She has been tremendous in the Golden Valley, finishing the conference season with a 10-0 record, 0.38 ERA, eight complete games, six shutouts and 106 strikeouts. In addition to her pitching stats, she is a solid offensive player as well. She is hitting .419 with 15 runs, 15 RBIs, six doubles and two home runs.
Miller had a solid freshman season in 2011. She was an all-conference selection en route to finishing the year with a 21-4 record, 1.68 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 120.2 innings pitched. She led the Lady Eagles to the Final Four State Tournament. She made 29 appearances and 23 starts, finishing the year with six complete games and four shutouts. She led Siskiyous to the conference championship with a 39-8 overall record and a 17-3 league mark.
In addition to being a standout on the field, she is outstanding in the classroom. She is a Scholar-Athlete selection at Siskiyous and carries a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Prior to her stint at Siskiyous, Miller was a standout prep player in Portland, Ore. She led Sunset High School to the 6A state championship game in both 2009 and 2010.
Miller joins four other student-athletes who have signed to play at Upstate beginning next fall. She joins Mellena Helms (INF, Concord, N.C.), twin sisters Jamie Ujvari (P, Niceville, Fla.) and Jessica Ujvari (C, Niceville, Fla.) and Jordan Wilson (C, Belmont, N.C.), who all signed during the early signing period in November.
