Spartan Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Bruins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The USC Upstate baseball team (21-10, 7-4 A-Sun) dropped a Doubleheader at Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Belmont (22-10, 9-2 A-Sun) today by scores of 3-0 and 5-1.

Belmont's Chase Brookshire picked up the 3-0 shutout in game one, improving to 5-1, while Garret Fanchier earned his 10th save of the season. Brookshire allowed six hits and recorded seven strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Upstate sophomore David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) took his first loss of the season, falling to 5-1. He tossed seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits, while fanning three Bruin batters. Senior Andrew Wyant (Newton, N.C.) threw one inning in relief, recording one strikeout.

Offensively, the Spartans were led by juniors Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) and Tyler Miller (Fort Mill, S.C.), posting 3-for-4 outings at the plate. Junior Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) went 1-for-4 at bat for Upstate in the first contest.

Belmont claimed game two of the doubleheader 5-1 as Matt Hamann collected the win, moving to 2-3 on the year. He allowed just one hit and one run, while sitting down four Spartan batters and walking none for a complete game effort. Upstate freshman Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) spoiled Hamann's no-hitter in the eighth inning with a lead-off double down the leftfield line.

Guers advanced to third when senior Tyler Cook (Bloomington, Ill.) grounded out to third. The Spartan leftfielder then scored off of a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Bruins jumped on the board early in the second game, scoring five runs in the second inning. However, Upstate junior Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.) settled down and didn't give up any more runs for the rest of the contest. The lefty slipped to 4-1 on the season. In seven innings pitched, he gave up eight hits and five runs, while striking out six Bruin batters and walking one.

Upstate wraps up the three game series at Belmont tomorrow with a 12 p.m. CT start. Follow the Spartans this season on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
