Upstate Downs Tennessee State for Third Straight Win

Spartanburg, S.C. – Torrey Craig scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds as USC Upstate won its third straight game following a 73-64 victory over Tennessee State Saturday afternoon from the Hodge Center.

Ricardo Glenn added 15 points and six rebounds, while Jodd Maxey finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high four steals to help Upstate capture its 12th straight non-conference home victory.

Patrick Miller had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and M.J. Rhett turned in a double-double for Tennessee State with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

USC Upstate (5-3) quickly built a seven-point lead just over four minutes into the game and took its biggest lead of the half with just over five minutes remaining when Glenn hit a pair of free throws to give the Spartans a 27-15 advantage. 

Tennessee State (0-8) answered by closing the half on a 15-6 run over the final 4:51 to cut the Upstate lead to 33-30 at halftime.

Craig scored the first five points of the second half to push the Upstate lead back to eight points at 38-30 before Tennessee State pulled to within four points minutes later following a pair of free throws from Jaleel Queary.

Three straight baskets from Upstate thereafter gave the Spartans a 48-38 lead with just over 12 minutes left to play. Tennessee State managed to cut the Upstate lead to four points at the 8:40 mark, but Upstate used its size inside to score four straight baskets in the paint to regain a 10-point lead with just over six minutes remaining.

Jacquan Nobles hit a three-pointer with a minute remaining to pull Tennessee State within seven points, but a dunk from Craig and two free throws from Glenn on the next two possessions put Upstate ahead by 11 and the Spartans held on for the nine-point win. 

USC Upstate returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to face the University of Cincinnati from Fifth Third Arena.
