Spartanburg, S.C. – Andrew Rowsey scored 19 points and David Robertson added 18 to lead UNC Asheville to a 73-63 victory over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon from the Hodge Center.
Jaron Lane added 14 points and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free line, while D.J. Cunningham finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Torrey Craig scored 19 points to go along with nine rebounds and moved into sole possession of third place on the Upstate's all-time scoring list. Ty Greene also scored 19 points and hit a career-high 10 free throws. Ricardo Glenn added 11 points and six rebounds.
Craig gave USC Upstate its largest lead of the game with a three-pointer midway through the first half to put the Spartans ahead 16-10. UNC Asheville answered with a 12-0 run over the next 2:15 to take a 22-16 advantage following a pair of free throws from Rowsey.
Two free throws from Greene with just over two minutes remaining in the first half pulled Upstate to within six points at 29-23, but Robertson hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the half to push the Bulldog lead back to nine points at halftime.
UNC Asheville opened the second half on an 11-4 run to open up a 16-point lead just over four minutes into play. The Bulldogs would hold a double digit lead until Upstate pulled within nine points after a free throw from Greene with 2:25 remaining. Another free throw from Greene followed by one from Craig cut the UNC Asheville deficit to seven, but the Bulldogs answered on the ensuing possession with a baseline dunk from Cunningham to go up 63-52 with just under two minutes to play.
Upstate would pull within seven points four times over the final 1:35, but Lane hit all eight of his free throws during that stretch to help the Bulldogs hold on for the victory.
USC Upstate returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina from Colonial Life Arena.
