CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's track & field teams closed out the Charlotte 49er Classic Saturday for a solid opening weekend of the outdoor season as the Spartan women set two school records in relays.
The Upstate women's team opened the day, breaking the program record in the 4x100-meter relay as both sets of Spartan relay teams crossed the line before the previous school record time of 50.47 set at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. The freshman foursome of Semaj Tolliver, Dominique Nock, Heaven Briggs and Brenicke Johnson clocked in at 46.62, taking fourth-place. Freshman Sierra White, sophomore Brittany Walls, freshman Sarah Thomas and junior Ashley Edmond finished in 49.85 to finish 12th.
Later in the afternoon, Edmond, Nock and Briggs joined freshman Rebecca Elliott in the 4x400-meter relay to turn in an Upstate record time of 4:02.69, garnering 10th-place. The previous program-best time of 4:13.22 was set in 2011 at the Furman Invitational. In the men's 4x400, freshman Tracy Fisher, freshman Carlton White, senior Danny Moore and junior Jake McKown teamed up to cross the line in 3:27.75 for a solid opening weekend time.
In the men's 800-meter, senior Cameron Thomas claimed second-place with a personal-best time of 1:51.76. He was followed by junior Matt Johnson in fifth, clocking in at 1:53.66. Juniors Andrew Kipchumba and Michael Johnson also competed in the 800-meter, posting times of 1:59.05 and 2:04.48, respectively, while junior Joey Daversa finished in 2:10.89.
On the women's side, freshman Anastasia Kolesnitchenko crossed the 800-meter line first for the Spartans with a strong time of 2:20.06. Her classmates Ashleigh Torres and Molly Bliss trailed her in the event, posting times of 2:22.03 and 2:23.89.
Upstate senior Kenny Sugishita came in seventh in the men's discus finals with a toss of 50.02-meters (164-01). In the women's shot put, Walls recorded a throw of 11.37-meters (37-03.75). She followed that performance, clearing 1.55-meters (5-01.00) in the high jump for ninth-place, while Fisher recorded a leap of 1.83-meters (6-00.00) in the men's high jump.
In the women's 3,000-meter run, sophomore Jasmine Polite recorded a time of 10:56.49 to finish 13th.
