Upstate Falls to ETSU in A-Sun Home Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. – Megan Devine tallied 22 kills to lead ETSU to a 3-0 victory over USC Upstate in A-Sun volleyball action Thursday night in the Hodge Center. The match was Upstate's A-Sun home opener.

Upstate (1-10, 1-2) hung tight in the first set, but after ETSU (9-6, 3-0) claimed the win in the frame, the Buccaneers went on for the win in straight sets. The Buccaneers won by scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-13.

Kayla Eversgerd finished with 10 kills and six digs to lead the Upstate attack. Lexi Gober added 21 assists, eight digs and three kills for the Spartans.

Upstate and ETSU battled early in the first set before the Buccaneers used a 6-0 run to open a 13-6 lead. The Spartans regrouped and cut the lead to three, 15-12, but ETSU built its lead to as many as seven before taking the first set, 25-21.

The second set started much like the first with the frame tied at 5-5. However, ETSU went on a 15-5 run to open a 20-10 lead and went on to take the set by a score of 25-11.

ETSU built an early lead in the third set, opening a 10-3 lead. The Buccaneers increased its advantage to 10, 15-5, and led by as many as 12 before taking the frame, 25-13.

ETSU hit .408 for the match, finishing with 50 kills with just 10 errors. Meredith Hardy tallied 10 kills with just one error to help the Buccaneer cause. Jamie Rutledge finished with 38 assists.
