DeLand, Fla. – Willie Green scored 24 points and Stetson held USC Upstate to just three points in overtime on its way to a 77-73 victory Saturday afternoon from the Edmunds Center.
Torrey Craig hit a three-pointer with just under three minutes left in regulation to give USC Upstate a 70-66 lead. Stetson cut the deficit in half with free throws from Willie Green and Brian Pegg on consecutive possessions.
After a missed three-pointer on the ensuing Upstate possession, Pegg struck again with a tip-in off a miss by Green to tie the game at 70-70 with 41 seconds remaining. Upstate missed a three-pointer on its next possession, but secured the offensive rebound with 13.1 seconds left and called timeout. Stetson caused an Upstate turnover on the final possession to force overtime.
Stetson scored the first six points of overtime before Ty Greene hit a three-pointer with 54 seconds to pull Upstate within three points at 76-73. Aaron Grahman missed a jumper on the next possession to give Upstate a chance to tie the game with 22 seconds remaining. Greene had an open look from the wing, but his three-pointer was just off the mark and rimmed out and into the hands of Pegg. Pegg hit one of two free throws thereafter and Stetson held on for its second win in a row.
Greene finished with 20 points and hit four three-pointers for his third straight game with at least 20 points. The Knoxville, Tenn., native leads the league in scoring during conference play. Craig added 17 points and six rebounds, while Karim Mawuenyega scored a career-high 11 points and hit three 3-pointers.
The game featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties with no team leading by more than six points. The Spartans shot just 14.3 percent in overtime and managed just one field goal. Stetson was also limited to one field goal on 20.0 percent shooting, but the Hatters were 5-for-8 from the free throw line.
Upstate and Stetson went back-and-forth for the first 12 minutes of the first half before a three-pointer from Hunter Miller put the Hatters ahead 24-18 with just over eight minutes left. The Spartans answered by going on a 13-2 run over the next 2:49 to open up a 31-26 lead with 5:22 remaining.
Stetson scored the next six points and held Upstate to just three free throws over the final 3:36, as the two teams entered halftime tied 36-36. Stetson shot 51.9 percent from the field and held Upstate to 43.3 percent in a half that featured eight ties and eight lead changes.
Upstate returns to the court Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Jacksonville to the Hodge Center.
