Spartanburg, S.C. – Ricardo Glenn had a double-double for the second straight game and USC Upstate defeated North Florida 71-60 Saturday afternoon from the Hodge Center.
Glenn finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds to help Upstate outscore North Florida 42-14 in points in the paint. Ty Greene tallied 16 points, six rebounds and tied a career-high with seven assists.
Torrey Craig added 15 points and six rebounds to become the first player in Atlantic Sun history to rank in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and three-pointers made. Fred Miller scored 11 points and was the fourth Spartan in double figures.
Dallas Moore led North Florida with 18 points, while Jalen Nesbitt finished with 12 points and two steals.
USC Upstate limited North Florida to just six field goals in the first half and outscored the Ospreys 26-6 in the paint on its way to a 36-25 lead at halftime. Glenn finished the first half 5-for-6 from the field and paced the Spartans with 10 points and four rebounds.
Fred Miller fueled a 13-2 run midway through the period to help Upstate turn a 10-8 lead into a 23-10 advantage with 7:30 left before halftime. Miller scored seven points during the run and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the opening period.
Two free throws from Jalen Nesbitt pulled North Florida to within seven points towards the end of the half, but Upstate finished with five easy baskets in the paint over the final five minutes and held North Florida to one field goal during that stretch.
Upstate opened the second half on fire and used a 13-5 run over the first 3:33 to open up a 49-30 lead capped by a three-pointer from Greene. A 10-1 run by North Florida minutes later trimmed the Upstate lead to 54-45 midway through the half.
Back-to-back baskets from Greene and Glenn pushed the Upstate lead back 13 points, and Upstate held North Florida to only three field goals over the final 7:07 to secure the victory and improve to 7-1 at home this season.
USC Upstate returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Kennesaw State to the Hodge Center.
