Ames, Iowa – Bryanna Fernstrom had a game-high 25 points to lead Iowa State to a 98-76 victory over USC Upstate in front of 9,656 fans Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum.
The Spartans fall to 0-2 on the season while the Cyclones improve to 1-0.
Sharmayne Edwards scored a career-high 25 points for Upstate while Brittany Starling picked up her first double-double of the season on 15 points and 12 rebounds. Travonda Haddock added eight points, and Brittany Clency and Alex Stanford had seven apiece. Maddie Herr and Raven Jefferson both chipped in six points.
Fernstrom was 8-of-16 from the field to lead five Iowa State players in double-figures, joined by Seanna Johnson (20), Brynn Williamson (13), Emily Durr (10) and Nicole Blaskowsky (10). Williamson and Johnson both had double-doubles as Williamson pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds and Williamson contributed 10.
Upstate missed on its first six field-goal attempts as Iowa State opened the game on a 14-0 run before a layup by Starling got the Spartans on the scoreboard with 16:05 left. Starling scored the first six Upstate points with her last bucket cutting its deficit to 15-6. The Cyclones followed with back-to-back field-goals from Jadda Buckley and Blaskowsky to go back up 20-6.
The Spartans got to within ten points twice after that with the last coming when a jumper from Stanford cut Iowa State's lead to 24-14 with 10:49 remaining. The Cyclones outscored USC Upstate 18-5 over the next 4:35 to increase their lead to 42-17 capped by two free-throws from Williamson. Upstate answered with a quick 7-2 run of its own as Edwards scored four of them to trim the lead to 44-24.
A jumper by Edwards sent the Spartans into halftime trailing 53-32 as she and Starling both had 12 points in the opening stanza after going a combined 12-for-23 from the field.
Edwards and Shelby Hicks picked up the first four points of the second half as Upstate continued to chip away at the Iowa State lead, getting to within 53-36 at that point. The Cyclones answered with an 8-3 run increase their lead to 61-39 as Fernstrom had five points during that stretch. Nikki Moody's three-pointer just over a minute later gave Iowa State a 25-point cushion. Edwards had the next eight points for the Spartans with her last, a triple, making the score 69-47 with 13:11 left.
The Cyclones led by as many as 27 points in the second half when two free-throws by Johnson at the 4:27 mark gave Iowa State a 91-64 lead. Upstate was successful on its next three three-pointers from Haddock and Herr, with the last coming from Haddock to make it a 94-73 contest with just under two minutes left on the clock. Stanford scored the game's final three points to put the final score at 98-76.
The Spartans shot 42.6% (29-of-68) as a team and 56.3% behind the three-point line. Upstate made nine of its 14 three-point attempts in the second half as Clency, Edwards, Haddock and Herr had two three's each.
Iowa State went 31-of-64 overall for a 48.4% clip and 8-for-21 (38.1%) from three-point range.
The Spartans host Converse College Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in their home opener.
