Wright State Holds Off Upstate in Final Minutes

Spartanburg, S.C. – JT Yoho scored 17 points and Wright State held on for a 56-51 victory over USC Upstate Saturday evening in the final game of the Spartanburg Marriott Upstate Classic from the Hodge Center.

Mario Blessing gave Upstate its largest lead when his three-pointer put the Spartans ahead 25-18 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Wright State scored the next seven points and pulled even on a jumper by Yoho before the Spartans regained the lead on a Fred Miller jumper just before halftime.

The Raiders opened the second half on a 14-1 run and held Upstate to without a field goal for the first 11:05 to build a 40-29 lead. The Spartans cut the deficit to five when Blessing knocked down a three-pointer from the wing with 7:17 left to play. Grant Benzinger answered with a three-pointer and Reggie Arceneaux hit a jumper to push the lead back to 10 points with just under six minutes remaining.

Miller's third 3-pointer of the night brought Upstate to within three points with 1:32 left, but the Spartans committed a turnover and missed a deep three-pointer and were forced to foul. Wright State went 4-for-4 from the free throw line over the final 20 seconds to secure its first win of the tournament.  

Miller finished with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals, while ShunQuez Stephens tied a career-high with 10 rebounds.

The Spartans finished the event with a 2-1 record after defeating FIU on day one and Cal State Fullerton Friday on day two.

Upstate returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host Barber Scotia from the Hodge Center.
