Jacksonville, Fla. – Ricardo Glenn scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for his conference-leading 10th double-double of the season to lead USC Upstate to an 81-70 victory over North Florida Thursday evening from the UNF Arena.
Torrey Craig finished with 16 points and six rebounds and moved into second place all-time at Upstate and fifth place all-time in the A-Sun with 2,053 career points. The Great Falls, S.C., native is one of only three players in A-Sun history with 2,000 points and 900 rebounds.
Jodd Maxey had 16 points and nine rebounds, while Fred Miller added 14 points and hit a career-high four three-pointers.
Charles McRoy led North Florida with 15 points. Travis Wallace had 13 and Jalen Nesbitt added 12.
Upstate has now won six of its last eight games and sits in sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
USC Upstate shot 57.1 percent in the first half and used hot shooting to jump out to a 15-4 lead over the first 5:04. A three-pointer from Beau Beech at the 12:38 mark pulled North Florida to within 18-12, but an old fashioned three-point play from Maxey capped a 7-0 run to put the Spartans ahead 25-12.
Two straight baskets from Wallace cut the Upstate deficit to 25-18. Upstate, however, used back-to-back three-pointers from Josh Cuthbertson and Miller to go back up by 13. The Spartans would go on to lead by as many as 15 before North Florida scored the final four points of the half to trim the Upstate lead to 44-32 at halftime.
Upstate maintained a double digit for most of the second half and never let North Florida get any closer than seven points. The Ospreys pulled within seven points three times in the final six minutes, but Upstate went 6-for-8 from the free throw line over the final1:29 to preserve the win.
USC Upstate returns to action Saturday at 3:15 p.m. when the Spartans take on Jacksonville from Swisher Gymnasium.
