Upstate Falls to Presbyterian

Spartanburg, S.C. – Beau Dees pitched seven shutout innings and struck out eight to lead Presbyterian to a 5-1 victory over USC Upstate Friday afternoon from Harley Park.

Dees scattered four hits and didn't allow a base runner to reach second base until the seventh inning to improve to 2-0 this season. Ethan Wortkoetter picked up the save after working the final 1.1 innings.

Upstate starter Richie Lacell (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight innings in six innings on the hill.

Presbyterian (3-1-1) used a two-out rally in the top of the first inning to scratch across a run and take an early 1-0 lead. Brad Zebedis doubled to right and came around to score when Brandon Paul followed with a single through the left side.

In the sixth inning, the Blue Hose once again capitalized with two outs, using a two-run single through the left side from Nate Chong to go ahead 3-0. Presbyterian tacked on another two-out run in the eighth inning on a RBI single from catcher Derek Long.

USC Upstate (3-3) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single from Tyler Lesch. Brian Thompson singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second when Daniel Fickas followed with a walk. After Thompson and Fickas moved up one base on a balk by Paul Sanders, Lesch laced a single through the left side to pick up his second RBI of the season.

Presbyterian used an RBI single from Brandon Martin in the top of the ninth for its final run of the game.

USC Upstate returns to action Saturday at 12 p.m. when the Spartans host Pittsburgh from Harley Park.
