Jacksonville, Fla. – Jarvis Haywood scored 24 points and had eight rebounds to lead Jacksonville to an 88-82 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon from Swisher Gymnasium.
Keith McDougald finished with 20 points and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line, while Vince Martin added 18 points and five assists for the Dolphins.
Torrey Craig led Upstate with 21 points to go along with three rebounds. Karim Mawuenyega scored a career-high 14 points and hit a career-best four three-pointers, and Jodd Maxey had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jacksonville led by as many as 21 points in the second half and held an 81-69 lead with just under a minute remaining following a pair of free throws from Haywood. Mawuenyega answered on the other end with a three-pointer to pull Upstate to within single digits for the first time since the 1:45 mark of the first half.
McDougald put Jacksonville back ahead by 11 with two free throws of his own, but Upstate used a basket from Babatunde Olumuyiwa on the ensuing possession to pull to within 83-74. Two free throws from Martin pushed the Dolphins ahead again by 11 before Mawuenyega hit another trey to cut the deficit to 85-77 with 23 seconds remaining.
On the next Upstate possession, Mawuenyega hit another three-pointer to pull the Spartans to within 87-80 with 15 seconds on the clock. Martin hit one of two free throws on the other end, and a Craig layup on the final Spartan possession left Upstate trailing by six as time expired.
Jacksonville shot 60.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc on its way to its second straight win.
Jacksonville and USC Upstate went back-and forth for the first few minutes of the first half before the Dolphins used a 16-4 run over a 3:52 stretch to open up a 20-10 lead. A three-pointer from Mario Blessing at 9:09 mark pulled Upstate within 25-19, but Jacksonville scored the next six points to go ahead 31-19.
An old fashioned three-point play from Craig with just under six minutes remaining cut the Jacksonville deficit to 34-29. The Dolphins, however, closed the half on an 8-2 run to hold a 42-31 lead at intermission.
Jacksonville shot 62.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from three-point range in the first half.
USC Upstate returns to action Friday when the Spartans host ETSU at 7 p.m. from the Hodge Center. The game will be televised live by CSS and Upstate will honor its four departing seniors following the game.
