Leading by just three points with just over six minutes remaining, USC Upstate used an 11-2 run over the next 4:11 to take its largest lead of the game at 75-63 with 1:50 left to play. Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard hit two free throws to pull ETSU within 75-65, and two missed free throws on the Upstate end allowed Rembert to cut the Spartan lead to 75-68 with a three-pointer on the ensuing Buccaneer possession.
Two more missed free throws by Upstate and two made free throws from Rembert allowed ETSU to climb back to within five points with 54 seconds remaining. After a turnover by the Spartans, Rembert struck again with a three-pointer in the corner to leave ETSU trailing by only two with 43 seconds left to play.
Upstate guard Ty Greene drew a foul on the ensuing inbounds pass and hit both free throws to give the Spartans a 77-73 cushion, and a steal by Maxey at midcourt on the next ETSU possession forced the Buccaneers to foul. Maxey hit one of two free throws, and ETSU missed its final shot and elected to foul Craig when he came down with the rebound. Craig made one of two free throws before a turnover by Rembert allowed Upstate to claim its fifth straight win over ETSU.
Upstate returns to the court Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host the first round of the A-Sun Tournament from the Hodge Center. Upstate's opponent has yet to be determined, but the Spartans will face the No. 6 seed.
