Jacksonville, Fla. – Anna Miller turned in a dominant performance with 13 strikeouts in the circle in game two and Dana Landers finished the day with five hits as the USC Upstate softball team swept an A-Sun doubleheader at North Florida Saturday afternoon. The Spartans won by scores of 5-2 and 4-1.
Upstate improved to 25-4 overall and 6-2 in the A-Sun with the doubleheader sweep. The Spartans will go for the series sweep Sunday when they meet up with the Ospreys at 1:00 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex. UNF fell to 17-10 overall and 2-6 in the league.
"Anna and Lexi (Shubert) really pitched well today, both with complete game efforts," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "We hit the ball well, as usual. But, today, we got THE hit when we needed it. We are looking forward to playing tomorrow."
The series pits the defending A-Sun Tournament champions, Upstate, against the defending regular season champions, UNF.
Miller was on throughout her start in game two of the doubleheader. She allowed two hits and struck out 13 en route to improving to 8-2 on the year. She gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh as the only blemish against her, having allowed just one hit through the first six innings.
After a scoreless first inning, Upstate opened a 2-0 lead in the second. After Maddison Kieffer doubled to lead off the inning, pinch runner Ryan Rector scored when Cheyenne Griffin singled to center and the center fielder made an error fielding the ball. Erin Schattle later singled to drive in Meredith Barnes.
Upstate made it a 3-0 lead with a run in the sixth on Kaitlyn Jaeger's sacrifice fly. The Spartans opened a 4-0 advantage with a run in the seventh inning when Landers singled to drive in Shellie Robinson.
UNF cut the Upstate lead to 4-1 on Marissa Thomas' solo home run, but that was the only thing the Ospreys were able to get off the dominant Miller.
Miller struck out two batters in six of the seven innings she pitched. UNF starter Kayla Goff fell to 4-4 after allowing two runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
Landers finished the game with three hits to lead the Upstate offensive attack.
Landers started things off for Upstate in the first game. She doubled with one out and scored when Griffin reached on an error to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Upstate opened a 2-0 advantage when Schattle scored all the way from first when Robinson reached on an error.
UNF rallied to tie the score with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Ashley Holton scored an unearned run when Lexi Taylor reached on an error in the fourth and Abby Tewey drove in a run with an RBI single in the fifth.
Just as UNF got into the game, Upstate regained control and put the game away with three runs in the sixth. Kendall Settlemyre started things off with a leadoff solo home run to right for the eventual game-winning hit. Robinson doubled to drive in a run and Landers singled to plate another as the Spartans opened a 5-2 advantage.
The insurance runs were all that Upstate starter Lexi Shubert would need. She went the distance, allowing just one earned run on three hits. She struck out seven en route to improving to 11-1 on the year. UNF starter Kaylie Wallace fell to 7-4 with the loss. She allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits with just one strikeout.
Landers finished with two hits to lead the Spartans at the plate.
