Spartanburg, S.C. – Ricardo Glenn scored 22 points and had nine rebounds to lead USC Upstate to an 80-74 victory over North Florida Tuesday night from the Hodge Center in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Upstate advances to the semifinals for the second straight year and will travel to Macon, Ga., to face second-seeded Mercer Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. from Hawkins Arena.
Ty Greene added 14 points, Fred Miller scored 13 points to go along with four assists and Jodd Maxey finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Torrey Craig picked up five rebounds and became Upstate's all-time leader with 931 career boards. The Great Falls, S.C., native also tallied four steals to help force North Florida into 18 turnovers, allowing Upstate to outscore the Ospreys 22-9 in points off turnovers.
Chris Davenport led North Florida with a career-high 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds. A-Sun Freshman of the Year Dallas Moore added 13 points and four rebounds, while Travis Wallace finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
ShunQuez Stephens gave Upstate its largest lead of the game when his layup put the Spartans ahead 61-46 with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Spartans maintained a double digit lead until Moore hit a jumper at the 5:48 mark to pull North Florida within nine points.
After a baseline jumper from Maxey pushed the Upstate lead back to double digits, a basket from Wallace and a three-pointer by Moore cut the Spartan lead to 68-62 to 4:10 remaining. Glenn answered for Upstate with an old fashioned three-point play, fouling out Demarcus Daniels in the process.
Four straight points by North Florida cut the deficit to just five points with 2:38 remaining, but Glenn once again hit another big basket to give the Spartans a 73-66 cushion. North Florida managed to get within five points in the final two minutes, but Upstate went 7-for-10 over the final 1:13 to secure the victory.
