Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Luke Weber became the USC Upstate all-time doubles leader with a blast off the left field wall in the second inning, but College of Charleston scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 5-3 victory Wednesday afternoon from Patriots Point.
Weber collected his 54th career double to move past the 53 Chris Nowak collected from 2002-04.
College of Charleston pushed across a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Carl Wise. Blake Butler drew a walk to lead off the game and took third on a single to left field by Nick Pappas. Wise followed with his 43rd RBI of the season when he lifted a line drive into deep left field.
Upstate answered with a run in the second inning on an RBI single from left fielder Stephen Dowling for his 14th RBI of the season. Weber led off the inning with a double off the left field wall, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of AJ Mackey. A single thereafter from Jordan Miller put runners on first and second with one out for the Spartans. After a groundout by Justin Allen moved each runner up one base, Dowling slapped a single through the right side to bring home Mackey.
Wise regained the lead for College of Charleston with a groundout to the left side in the third inning for his second RBI of the game. The Cougars built a 3-1 lead with a run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch that allowed Brandon Glazer to score.
Weber continued his hot hitting in the sixth inning with a two-run home run over the left field wall to pull Upstate even at 3-3. It was Weber's third home run of the season and snapped a 14-game homerless streak for the Spartans.
College of Charleston broke the tie with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning to open up a 5-3 lead. Glazer reached on a throwing error on the Upstate infield to open the inning and scored two batters later on a triple from Morgan Phillips. Butler drove Phillips in two batters later on a fielder's choice to shortstop.
Cougar reliever Hunter Rice (1-0) picked up the win in relief despite giving up two runs on one hit in two innings of work. Michael Hanzlik registered his 10th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
Brian Boocock (0-1) gave up just one hit and no earned runs, but suffered the loss due to both unearned runs scoring during his inning on the mound.
Upstate returns to the diamond Friday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Jacksonville to Harley Park to begin a three-game series.
