Nashville, Tenn. – Josh Williams scored 18 points and Lipscomb held off USC Upstate in the final seconds en route to a 60-58 victory Tuesday evening from Allen Arena.
Aaron Korn gave Lipscomb a 57-51 lead with just under four minutes remaining with a jumper from the elbow to cap a 7-0 run for the Bisons' largest lead of the game. Ty Greene halted the run with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four.
J.C. Hampton pushed the lead back to six points with two free throws, but Fred Miller hit a three-pointer on the following possession to pull Upstate within 59-56 with 1:45 left. After a missed three-pointer by Nathan Moron, Upstate used a layup from Jacob Schulte with just over a minute to climb within one point.
The Spartans forced a turnover on the next play and gained possession with 34.7 seconds remaining. Upstate missed its initial shot, but retained possession on an offensive rebound by Schulte. The Bisons, however, stepped in the passing lane and picked off Upstate, forcing the Spartans to foul Moran with eight seconds left. After Moran hit one free throw, Mario Blessing's last second three-point attempt went long and Lipscomb improved to 2-0 in league play.
Michael Buchanan led Upstate with 13 points and Miller added 12 points and six rebounds. Greene finished with 11 points and tied a career-high with seven assists.
Upstate led by seven points midway through the second half before Lipscomb went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the half.
Greene put Upstate ahead 13-9 midway through the first half on a jumper just inside the free throw line. Moran answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to ignite an 8-0 run and put the Bisons ahead 17-13 at the 8:45 mark.
Back-to-back layups by Chad Lang late in the half allowed Lipscomb to build a 30-27 lead, but Greene hit a three-pointer thereafter to even the score at 30 with 1:41 remaining. Denny Talbott put the Bisons back ahead with a layup in traffic before Buchanan used a layup with 33 seconds left to tie the score at 32 heading into halftime.
Upstate returns to the hardwood Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Northern Kentucky to the Hodge Center.
