Spartanburg, S.C. – The North Florida Ospreys rallied from two-sets down to defeat the USC Upstate volleyball team 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 18-25, 9-15) Friday evening in A-Sun action from the Hodge Center.
Upstate falls to 12-6 overall and 0-2 in the league, while North Florida improves to 14-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Madison Haake led the Spartans with her fourth triple-double of the season on 12 kills, 18 assists and 14 digs, while Lexi Gober and Kayla Eversgerd each had a double-double. Gober compiled 26 assists and 12 digs, and Eversgerd 10 kills and 15 digs. Emily Koelling added 12 kills and Callie Yeargin 11, and Shannon Weiss posted 14 digs.
Carina Hoff led all players with 19 kills for the Ospreys while Abby Fesl and Ambre Desaulnay collected double-doubles. Fesl dished out 46 assists to go with 11 digs. Desaulnay finished with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Upstate scored the final six points of the first set to win 26-24 with three coming off combination blocks in a span of four plays. The Spartans led for most of the first set and held a 13-10 lead following a kill by Eversgerd. North Florida answered with an 8-3 run to go ahead 18-15 capped by Desaulnay's service ace. After Upstate fought back to tie the set at 18-18, the Ospreys scored three straight to take the lead back at 22-19. Haake and Koelling teamed up for two of the three blocks for the Spartans, while Koelling and Eversgerd combined for the other.
Upstate began the second set on a 5-1 run and took a four-point lead on Eversgerd's kill. North Florida cut the lead down to one, 9-8, several plays later, but the Spartans extended their lead out to 14-9 after back-to-back UNF errors. Upstate led by at least three after that until a block by Katarina Raicevic and Morgan Van Alstine put the score at 21-19. The Spartans limited North Florida to one point after that as they scored four of the last five points. Koelling gave Upstate the 25-20 win with her kill.
The Ospreys jumped out to an 8-2 advantage to start the third set and led by as many as nine, 14-5, on Rebecca Shearer's attack error. The Spartans made a late charge by trimming their deficit down to three, 23-20, after a kill from Shearer to conclude a 9-5 run. Tessa Alyman recorded the last two kills for North Florida to give it a 25-21 win.
The Ospreys forced a fifth set following their 25-18 win in set four. Upstate trailed by just two in the early stages when Fesl's service error made the score 10-8. North Florida broke the set open courtesy of a 7-3 run to give it a 17-11 lead on a kill from Van Alstine. Hoff and Desaulnay picked up the final two points for UNF and took the fourth set by seven.
The teams traded the first eight points of the fifth set when Shearer's kill evened the score at 4-4. Shearer put the Spartans to within one, 8-7, with another kill before the Ospreys rolled off three straight points to take an 11-7 lead forcing Upstate into a timeout. Hoff won the set for North Florida as her kill gave it the 15-9 win and 3-2 victory in the match.
The Spartans host Jacksonville at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
